CHOIR NEWS

Galilee musicians presented the concert, Hear the Heavens Ring!, on Sunday, December 11. It was a wonderful celebration of scripture and music, telling the story of Jesus’ birth in a profound way. The dinner afterward was delicious, and nearly 150 people were served by our kitchen volunteers. Thanks to all who made the event such a fine and memorable one.

FROM AGE TO AGE CONCERT
From Age to Age (FAtA), a professional choral ensemble, will be performing a concert at Galilee on Saturday, February 18 at 7:30 PM. In the afternoon on that day members of the Galilee choir will participate in a workshop with FAtA members, and then the two choirs will collaborate on some of the pieces performed in the concert. A reception will follow the concert, complete with delectable treats, giving us a time for visiting and chatting with choir members.
This is a wonderful opportunity to hear some great music - invite friends and family! We will be collecting a free will offering instead of selling tickets, but please let us know if you will be coming (sign up at the kiosk or call the church office (651-488-6769).

ANNUAL MEETING
Galilee's Annual Meeting will be held Sunday, January 29, 2012 following the worship service.
PROPOSED CONSTITUTION CHANGES
This is a summary of changes to our constitution approved by our Congregational Council and also the Saint Paul Area Synod Council. They will be presented for approval at the January 29, 2012 Congregational Annual Meeting.
The changes being considered in this new version are relatively straightforward and non-controversial.
1) Some of the changes are to make our constitution adopt the exact wording and format suggested by the 2009 model constitution of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA). The includes correcting paragraph numbers, getting the indents right, and changing the name of our council from “Church Council” to its new name “Congregational Council.” The ELCA wants this last change to avoid confusion with the council of the overall national church. These minor changes are scattered throughout the document.
2) Additional changes were approved at the 2011 ELCA Churchwide Assembly in August 2011. These changes focused on the process for separation of congregations from the ELCA. Considerable learning on this subject occurred after the 2009 Churchwide Assembly that adopted changes in sexuality policy and teachings. Essentially, the new policy requires that local bishops be present at the first congregational discussion of separation and that votes cannot be repeatedly forced on the congregation. These changes are found mostly in section C6.05.
3) Our Congregational Council also developed new wording and intent for paragraph C12.05.c. This change was made based on our experience with the roof and furnace purchases we needed to make this year. The change gives the council more flexibility without eliminating the constraint and overview of the whole congregation for very large purchases. The previous and new wording are shown below:
a. Old Wording.
The Church Council may enter into contracts of up to $1,500 for items not included in the budget except in case of emergencies that disrupt this congregation’s day-to-day ministry.
b. New Wording.
The Congregational Council may enter into contracts only up to $3,000 for items not included in the budget except in cases where contributions have been designated for that purpose or where delay could disrupt the congregation’s day to day ministry.
We recommend that the congregation approve these changes at the January 29th Annual Meeting. Copies of the entire new constitution are available in the church narthex or kiosk during December and January.
Sincerely,
Ronald Peterson on behalf of the Galilee Congregational Council.

BOOK DISCUSSION IN MARCH
It’s time to get ready for another Wednesday morning book discussion! We will read and discuss “Love Wins” by Rob Bell. This book is controversial in Christian circles, because it examines traditional beliefs about heaven, hell and salvation in the light of scripture, often drawing nontraditional conclusions. It is not a dull theological treatise; Bell writes in an engaging, easy to understand style, but the topic is still profound. Mark your calendar so you won’t miss the lively conversation about this book on the four Wednesdays in March at 7:00 AM at the Good Earth Restaurant in Roseville.
For more information, please contact Jo Ann French.
WINTER CARNIVAL
JIGSAW PUZZLE CONTEST
For several years, Galilee has entered a team in the Saint Paul Winter Carnival Puzzle Contest. This winter we will have THREE TEAMS! The contest will be held on Saturday, January 28, 2012 at 11 AM at the Landmark Center in Saint Paul. We will need to arrange carpooling for each team as parking can be difficult in downtown St. Paul during the Winter Carnival.
